Frank Lampard has accused his Chelsea players of being ‘too nice’ and ‘too passive’ as they were torn apart by Arsenal and sentenced to a sixth successive defeat in a season that spiraled out of control.

Chelsea’s terrible run of form continued after title chasers Arsenal, who returned to top of the table, scored three goals in the first 34 minutes at the Emirates Stadium.

Lampard said his players lack aggression and warned his side’s performance will not improve overnight, adding that this is the reality of the situation he has encountered at the club.

“We weren’t good enough, we were too nice to play against and too passive,” said Lampard, the interim manager. “From the moment I’ve been here it’s been evident that we’re too nice as a team.

“We have to find the reasons quickly. It’s not an overnight fix. This is something that really needs to be fixed. There are many parts to it.

Arsenal is a team that has been building for three years. They work on an idea and a way. It’s impossible for me to go in for three weeks and work on these things.

“We have to do the basics better and then we will make some progress. It’s clear tonight for me. The first half is nowhere near good enough. But it’s the reality. That’s what I got into.

How did the experts react?

Lampard has lost all of the last 10 games he has managed in all competitions – the first England manager to lose 10 in a row while in charge of a top-flight side since 1988 – and have won just once in his last 20 games as manager.

Jamie Carragher was scathing in his assessment of Lampard’s squad in commentary for Sky Sports, calling them an “absolute mess” under new owner Todd Boehly.

Absolutely shocking from Chelsea. This club is an absolute disaster. The situation could get much worse, unfortunately for Lampard, his staff and his supporters. It’s embarrassing from Chelsea. It’s like five aside. Three of them sat on their backsides. It sums up Chelsea’s season. Seeing how far they’ve fallen over these last 12 months is amazing.

It tells you that spending all the money you have is meaningless. You have to make a connection. Todd Boehly, the plans and ideas that he had, don’t work. They still have quality players on the pitch. Losing six games in a row is not acceptable. Think of the success this club has had. Since Arsenal last won the title, Chelsea have won 19 trophies.

Chelsea expect the best, they expect standards. This is a million miles away from it.

Ex-Chelsea and England midfielder Karen Carney, co-reporting alongside Carragher, said: “I can’t believe we were talking about them at first being good in defence. It was anything but This”.

Lampard oversaw a nightmarish run of four consecutive Premier League games for the first time since March 1998, while only once have Chelsea had a longer losing streak in the competition than their current six games in November 1993.

“It’s the worst record since I’ve been at the club,” Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta told Sky Sports. “We are the ones playing on the pitch and we have to turn the situation around. It’s difficult for everyone and we have to overcome these moments. Off the pitch we have many things to work on.”

Mark Schwarzer, speaking to the BBC, said:

I have to say, Chelsea, in defense absolutely everywhere. You see the Chelsea players, they are all watching the ball, nobody is defending.

There are big names in the Chelsea squad but they have had a terrible season by Chelsea standards. They are a team really low on trust. No one is putting their neck on the line. Nobody goes out there trying to express themselves.

If you look at Arsenal, Gabriel Jesus is their number nine, his contribution is immense. Arsenal distribute the goals between a number of players and this has been crucial for them this season. You look at Chelsea and it’s the exact opposite. Arsenal deserve to be where they are, they played very well tonight and throughout the season.
