THE Department of Food and Nutrition Sciences in Fresno State it is conduct a research study on the impact of fresh fruits and vegetables on diet-related diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and related health care costs.

Participating students who are food insecure and are overweight or obese will be screened for eligibility for diet-related disease based on body mass index and waist circumference.

Participants will have access to nutrition education, cooking classes, and grocery tours led by both the campus nutrition faculty and students. In addition, participants can receive a box of fresh fruit and vegetables weekly for six months or a gift card for the Save Mart supermarket. The study requires a one-year commitment, but participants are free to withdraw at any time.

The project is part of a three-year, $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Gus Schumacher Nutritional Incentive Program. Additional program support is provided by the Nutrition Incentive Hub.
